Pull up a seat in the intimate and dimly lit Chatterbox Jazz Club and listen to the rich, smoky chords dance from the guitars. Reserve a table for a nice dinner at the Jazz Kitchen and be blown away by the service and beautiful tunes floating through the house. Come for the sounds, the culture, or the atmospheric fixturesIndy Jazz Fest has something for all music lovers.

According to the event’s official website, Indy Jazz Fest is 10 days of concerts, master classes and panel discussions. Starting in 1999, Indy Jazz Fest brings history, music and education to locals and those just passing through.  A yearlong project of the not-for-profit Indianapolis Jazz Foundation, Indy Jazz Fest supports all organizations that promote education and awareness of jazz music.

Kicking off this week of live music all around town is an all-day tribute to famous Indianapolis guitarist Wes Montgomery. This tribute, which will be held at the IUPUI Campus Center on Sept. 17, will feature both regional musicians as well as national acts.

Local guitarist Charlie Ballantine, of Charlie Ballantine and the Providence Band, is one of the many artists who has been chosen to perform at the tribute.

“I’m really excited to get the opportunity to pay tribute to him,” Ballantine said. “As well as getting to see some of the greatest guitar players in the world come to Indianapolis to do the same.”

Charlie Ballantine and the Providence Band’s live performances are a force to be reckoned with. Ballantine’s bluesy, occasionally heavy guitar riffs lay down a soulful bed for saxophonist Amanda Gardier to lead with sultry, heady melodies.

In a recent review on Ballantine’s most recent album, Providence, Indianapolis Star writer David Lindquist reports, “In a nutshell: ‘Providence’ is a monster that sneaks up on a listener in the best way.”

Starting off strong and going out in a bang, Indy Jazz Fest ends with an 11 band block party that will send music fans home feeling the soul and sense of love in the Indy jazz community. As expressed by Ballantine, Indy Jazz Fest certainly has some very impressive artists on the bill this year. Local guitarists Joel Tucker and Ryan Taylor will play sets at both the Wes Montgomery tribute, as well as the block party.

“It’s always fun to witness how strong this local scene really is,” Ballantine said. “Any night of the week, you can hear world class music at the Chatterbox and Jazz Kitchen, and that isn’t something every city has.”

Come check out these local and international acts in person. Perfect for a memorable date night!
