Men's Basketball Falls to Omaha in Summit League Semifinals

The IUPUI Jaguar’s season came to an end Monday night in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After a big win on Saturday night against the North Dakota State Bison where the Jaguars played great basketball both on the offensive and defensive end, the same could not be said for Monday night against Omaha. Even though IUPUI had a day off on Sunday, they came out and looked like a complete opposite team than that was on the court Saturday night.

IUPUI shot a lowly 31.7 percent from the field, while the defense couldn’t hold Omaha under 50 percent, allowing them to shoot 50.8 percent from the field. IUPUI, who came into the game shooting 40 percent on the season from behind the three point line, could only muster a 23.1 percent shooting mark from three on Monday.

The Jaguars, who out rebounded the Bison on Saturday night by seven, got out rebounded on Monday night at a mark of 34-50. Getting outrebounded 16 times will make it hard for any team to come out victorious. IUPUI was also sloppy with the ball, turning it over a total of 16 times, many times when they could have kept the game close. To say things didn’t go their way would be an understatement, and getting outscored 18-42 in the first half certainly didn’t help matters.

Darell Combs scored a game high for the Jaguars with 22 points, shooting 7-15 from the field. and going 5-8 from the free throw line. He also posted 7 rebounds, just three shy from a double-double. The Jaguar’s poor first half is what really did them in, while they were outscored in the first half by a mark of 18-42, they came out and only got outscored 44-48 in the second half. If the Jaguars could have kept things a little closer in the first half, there may have been a completely different outcome.

The Jaguars have a lot too look forward to in the coming season. Things may not have ended the way they wanted to this season, but IUPUI looks like a dangerous team for the future. While they couldn’t put together a win streak of more than two games this past season if they can get a little more consistency and shoot the three like they did this year, their outcome next season could be much better.

IUPUI seems like a team on their way up and winning their first tournament game in six years shows that. Next year IUPUI will hope to go one game further and play in the Summit League championship. With a little more consistency and with the confidence they have built this season and in the tournament, this could  become a reality.
