On June 10th, Purdue President Mitch Daniels announced he would retire at the end of the year. This continues the retirement wave among high profile university presidents in recent years.
Daniels's successor will be Dr. Mung Chiang, the current Dean of the School of Engineering and Executive Vice President of Purdue.
Some faculty have complained about a lack of transparency in the process, although this was also the case during the search for IU President Pamela Whitten. It is markedly different, however, in that Daniel's retirement announcement occurred at the same time as the announcement of his successor, standing in stark contrast to the months long search for the current IU President and the ongoing nearly yearlong search for a permanent IUPUI chancellor.
Daniels was well-known for his decade-long tuition freeze for Purdue Students.
"We are proud that President Daniels and the Board of Trustees pioneered tuition freeze that has been providing Hoosiers and other students higher education with the highest value," said Chiang. "We will continue tuition freeze for as long as we can.”
Like Daniels, Chiang also emphasized a distinct mission for regional campuses.
“Purdue is a land-grant university system that consists of not just the West Lafayette campus but also part of IUPUI as well as PFW, PNW, and Purdue University Global. As I prioritize listening in the coming six months and beyond, I am eager to listen to the perspectives and insights from both Purdue students at IUPUI and from our partners in IU," said Dr. Chiang. "After all, Purdue and IU share the goals of learning, research and engagement with our state. And my goal is to, together with dedicated teams of Boilermakers, serve our students, faculty and staff…"
