After a two-year tenure as head coach, the Indiana Fever has fired their head coach, Christie Sides.
Under Sides, the Fever had a record of 33-47. In 2023 they had a 13-27 record, and in 2024 they went 20-20. Sides brought the Fever to their first playoffs since 2016.
Under her leadership, the team also managed to get back-to-back first draft picks Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark, who both won Rookie of the Year.
Being able to secure these players and help develop Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull, was a huge help to Sides who became a first-time head coach when she was hired in November of 2022. Unfortunately for Sides, some notable criticisms about her coaching were her struggle with defensive rotations, lineup changes and standing up for her players. She also had issues utilizing her star players and knowing when to make the right decisions.
The Fever started the season 2-9 and turned it around after the Olympic break to clinch the number six seed in the playoffs. They were swept in a two-game first round series against the Connecticut Sun. The Fever had a win against every WNBA team this past season, except for the Las Vegas Aces.
The Fever were known to be continuously at the bottom of the league, but Sides helped bring them out of it. For the first time since the 2017 draft, the Fever are not in the WNBA draft lottery.
“Leave it better than you found it,” Sides said on X.
The Fever are now the seventh team in the WNBA to release their head coach in the off season. With a new President and General Manager, the Fever are looking to change the atmosphere around the team.
