After more than two decades on the sidelines, head coach of IU Indianapolis women’s soccer, Chris Johnson, is retiring.

Johnson is the program’s all-time leader in wins after this final season. He tallied 160 wins in his 22-year career. Johnson had an incredible resume in his time with the Jaguars.

Johnson has been a league four-time coach of the year honoree, while taking the Jaguars to the NCAA tournament in 2009 and 2017.  The Jaguars won their first title after joining the Horizon League in 2017. During the 2009 season, his team had double-digit wins in six games and recorded a program record 17 wins in a season. They went on in the 2009 season to have the nation’s longest win streak, with 12 straight victories.

Within his successful seasons, Johnson has coached multiple great athletes on the field. He has coached six All-Region athletes, as well as three Player of the Year winners. Several of his players have gone on to play in professional leagues around the world.

Not only has he had successful players on the field, but many of his athletes have excelled in the classroom as well. His program has earned recognition from United Soccer Coaches multiple times and has ranked among the nation’s top 25 grade point averages multiple times. The programs under Johnson have ranked well in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate and Graduation Success Rate.

Women’s soccer senior Hannah Roberson had high praises for her coach.

“Coach Johnson was one of the few coaches I’ve had that truly knew and cared about all of his players,” Roberson said. “He has everyone’s best interests at heart and would do whatever he could to help his players out with that.”

The IU Indianapolis Athletic Department will begin its search immediately for the next head coach.
